    Arrest for laughing gas 'addict'
    From:Shine  |  2019-12-26 19:29

A junior college student who had been taking laughing gas for four years and sold the gas to cover her expenses has been arrested, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Three accomplices have also been arrested. Their gains from selling the gas exceeded 50,000 yuan (US$7,144), prosecutors said.

Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, can slow down the body’s reaction time and result in a calm, euphoric feeling. It is used for medical purposes such as treating pain. However, it also has some side effects and health risks. It can also be used in the food industry to whip cream so it's not hard for people to get it.

Minhang District People's Procuratoratesaid female student Xu started to take laughing gas in 2015 to keep her "full of energy." She soon became addicted and the amount of laughing gas she took grew larger and larger.

In April this year, she could not afford the amount of gas she needed and saw that someone was selling laughing gas via WeChat. She contacted the seller Niu, also a student, and got the gas from him. She profited 300 yuan from each box of gas.

Later, she also bought gas from another two sellers Wu and Wang.

Xu was caught by police in October with more than 10 boxes of laughing gas seized from her home. Police later traced Wang, Wu and a buyer Ma.
